Caterpillar's Natural Gas Engine Oil (NGEO) is the recommended oil for their natural gas generators. 
Caterpillar's oil recommendations 
Use oils with a sulfated ash content of 0.40–0.60%
  • Use specially formulated oils for engines with high power density ratings
  • Use oils that meet the requirements of a 7000-hour field evaluation
  • Do not use multigrade oils in gas engines
Factors to consider when choosing an oil
  • Temperature
    Conventional oils are best for moderate temperatures and less frequent use, while synthetic oils are best for extreme temperatures and frequent use. 

    Viscosity
  • The correct viscosity index can improve the generator's durability and lifespan.
