Does Your Address Qualify for Free Freight?
🏢 A Business Address May Not Be a Commercial Freight Address
Having a business at an address does not automatically make it a qualifying commercial freight location.
A home business, farm, car wash, restaurant, construction site, storage unit, school, or business without a loading dock or forklift may be classified by the freight carrier as residential or limited access.
The freight carrier makes the final address classification based on the property, access, location, and unloading conditions—not simply the business name or mailing address.
✅ Usually Qualifies
A qualifying commercial or industrial freight location generally has:
- Commercial or industrial property classification;
- Safe access for a full-size tractor-trailer;
- A commercial loading dock or forklift;
- Personnel available to inspect and unload the freight; and
- No special security or access restrictions.
⚠️ May Not Qualify
A location may require additional charges if it is:
- A residence or home-based business;
- A farm, ranch, rural, or remote property;
- A rural, non-metro, or indirect delivery zone in any state;
- A car wash, restaurant, school, church, or storage facility;
- A construction, utility, mine, quarry, or energy site;
- A government, military, airport, prison, or secured facility;
- Unable to accept a full-size tractor-trailer; or
- Without a commercial loading dock or forklift.
Rural and Indirect Delivery Zones
Rural and indirect delivery zones do not qualify for free standard freight.
Indirect zones are generally located outside major metropolitan delivery areas and may require delivery through a secondary carrier or freight terminal.
Rural locations include, but are not limited to, areas in Wyoming, Washington, Montana, California, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Utah, New Mexico, Missouri, Colorado, Texas, and Kansas.
This list is not exhaustive. Every state may contain rural, remote, or indirect delivery zones. The freight carrier makes the final classification based on the complete delivery address.
Why the Address Classification Matters
Free standard LTL freight is available only to qualifying commercial or industrial locations within our delivery network.
If the carrier classifies the address as residential, limited access, rural, remote, indirect, or otherwise requiring special service, additional charges will apply.
Additional charges may include:
- Residential or limited-access service;
- Liftgate service;
- Inside delivery;
- Delivery appointment or advance telephone call;
- Smaller delivery vehicle service;
- Rural, remote-area, or indirect-zone charges;
- Secondary carrier or terminal transfer charges;
- Redelivery, storage, or detention charges; and
- Address correction or reconsignment charges.
Customer Responsibility
Before ordering, please provide accurate information about your delivery location, including:
- Whether the property is a residence or home-based business;
- Whether the location is rural, remote, or outside a metropolitan area;
- Whether a full-size tractor-trailer can safely access the property;
- Whether a commercial loading dock or forklift is available;
- Whether an appointment, liftgate, or smaller truck is needed; and
- Whether the location has gates, security checks, or other access restrictions.
The customer is responsible for additional carrier charges caused by an incorrect address classification, incomplete information, or delivery requirements not disclosed before shipment.
